Micro and nanoparticles for nose-to-brain drug delivery
In medicine, particles, or tiny particles, are used to cure diseases. These particles are tiny drug couriers that can fight tumor or brain diseases, for example. In our labs, we are working to develop a special particle system that can attach to the nasal mucosa to release an encapsulated drug over time.
In the workshop you will make your own particles in the lab using an electrostatic phenomenon called „ionic gelation“. To do this, we will combine two common polymers:
-Alginate, which is derived from brown algae.
-Chitosan, which is derived from the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects.
This is not only exciting, but also important for the future of medicine. Who knows, maybe one day you can help develop new cures and help people…
